Statement on BerMax Caffe + Bistro Attack

April 19, 2019

I condemn Thursday night’s attack on BerMax Caffé + Bistro in the strongest possible terms.

That such a craven and cowardly act of assault and vandalism could happen anywhere is extremely distressing. That it has been described as a hate crime is a matter of grave concern to us all.

I’m deeply frustrated and immensely saddened by the ongoing and sustained attacks this business has seen over the past few months.

This poison of hate can not go unanswered. We all have an urgent obligation to confront anti-Semitism and other forms of hate, in every instance.

For that reason, I will be convening a community meeting to bring us together to embrace unity and discuss the actions we can take to confront this scourge of anti-Semitism and hate. I’ll share more details soon.

This cannot — and will not — stand in our community or in our city.
