Southwest Rapid Transitway (Stage 2) and Pembina Highway Underpass Project Update

March 25, 2018

Construction on the Southwest Transitway (Stage 2) and Pembina Highway Underpass Project continues. In 2018 you’ll see work on the following construction activities related to the Southwest Transitway Stage 2 project:

  • New Transitway connecting to the University of Manitoba, paired with an Active Transportation Path
  • Widening and reconstruction of Pembina Highway from Stafford to Point Road
  • New CN Rail and Transitway Bridges over Pembina Highway at the existing Underpass
  • New Transitway Overpass at McGillivray Blvd.
  • New “Park and Ride” Facilities at the McGillivray Station and Clarence Station
  • New Transitway and Active Transportation Path Bridges over Bishop Grandin

The construction work will involve clearing existing bush and trees, excavation, road and parking lot construction and, active transportation pathway construction. 2018 construction activities will begin the second week of March 2018 and will continue throughout the year, as weather permits. The Southwest Rapid Transitway Stage 2 and Pembina Highway Underpass Project is expected to be completed in late 2019, with service beginning in April of 2020.

While access will be maintained on all major routes and side roads during construction, there will be some road restrictions established to protect the public from unsafe interaction with equipment and activities and to provide a safe work environment for construction personnel. Pedestrian access will also be maintained, however, normal routes may be altered. For your safety, please respect warning signs and restrictions.

The City of Winnipeg realizes that the construction work may be disruptive and we will endeavor to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible. We thank you for your patience.
