I'm proud to announce that I have secured the necessary funding for a new River Heights Library that will be more accessible, provide increased programming, and feature a modern space for the community to learn and grow together.
The present library, although much beloved, faces some difficulties. The building envelope is in need of work, there is a lack of parking, it is not an accessible facility and it cannot provide the space needed for more books or the room to run innovative programs offered in other libraries.
After the first round of discussions with Library Services, they are proposing a stand-alone library on the Pan Am site, near the Pan Am Pool, that will accommodate more resources with varying spaces to allow additional programing and features that will allow people of all abilities to utilize the building. The new location will also feature adequate parking, yet be located on a bus route and in the River Heights area, because we all love being able to walk there.
The community has also started to envision how the public space at the present library can be re-purposed as well. Ideas such as a daycare, pop-up library and theatre space, additional classroom for the school and many other exciting ideas have come forward and discussions are on-going.
In April, we will be holding an open house to provide more information from Library Services about the proposed new library and to get additional input from you. More details and an exact date to follow.
