The efforts of John Orlikow, City Councillor for River Heights-Fort Garry, to secure the proper design and funding for the Waverley Underpass have paid off as the project was officially finalized by Winnipeg City Council, the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada today.
“It has been a journey to get this project approved but the wait is finally over. I want to thank all those that have supported me in getting the Waverley Underpass approved, including the thousands of people that have called in and signed the petition letting council know how important it is to the community and the city,” Orlikow said.
The Waverley Underpass will fix the city's most dangerous and busiest failed at-grade railway crossing. Presently, it is six times above acceptable safety levels. Building this underpass will result in vast improvements in safety, fewer drivers shortcutting through local neighbourhoods and eliminate numerous daily delays.
Winnipeg City Council’s decision today has made our city safer and improved the quality of life for River Heights-Fort Garry residents and for Winnipeggers in general.
