New summer yard waste depots now open in northwest Winnipeg

Friday, July 9, 2010     Winnipeg, MB. – Residents in the northwest area of the city can now recycle their summer yard waste by dropping it off at three new Leaf It With Us depots.  It will be composted into a reusable soil-like material and used to landscape finished landfill areas.   The depots accept leaves, lawn thatch, grass clippings, tree clippings, small branches, plants, flowers, and other garden material.   The following new depot locations are open seven days a week, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.   ·           Vimy Arena, Hamilton Avenue at Vimy Road – open until August 31 ·           St. James Civic Centre, 2055 Ness Avenue – open until November 15, weather permitting ·           Fire Hall #17, 1501 Church Avenue – open until November 15, weather permitting   The Public Service is currently looking for a fourth summer yard waste depot location in the northwest area of the city.    These depots provide residents on the automated garbage cart collection program with another option for disposing of their yard waste.   Other options for residents include: ·           Grasscycling or mulching – simply leave the grass clippings on the lawn after mowing.  The clippings dry out, decompose, and recycle the nutrients back into your lawn. ·           Backyard composting.  For more information, residents can: ·           call the 24-hour recorded yard waste information line at 986-8888, code 9813 ·           contact our 311 Centre, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca ·           visit winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste
