Changes to Hurst Way/Wilkes Avenue at Waverley Street

May 06, 2010

Westbound left turning drivers on Hurst Way have difficulty seeing oncoming eastbound through vehicles due to obstruction by stationary eastbound left turning vehicles.

In the 3-year period ending October 31, 2008, there were 10 reported collisions involving a westbound left turning vehicle in collision with an opposing eastbound through vehicle, a rate of 4.9 collisions per million approach vehicles.

To improve visibility, it is recommended that a slotted westbound left turn storage lane be constructed.

A separate westbound left turn storage lane will also increase westbound through capacity in the existing single westbound lane and improve eastbound left turning drivers’ visibility of oncoming westbound vehicles.
