Hockey Equipment Drive

October 12, 2012

For Immediate Release

Friday, Oct. 12, 2012

Winnipeg, MB – Mayor Sam Katz and Councillor Thomas Steen today kicked off a two-week hockey equipment drive, calling on Winnipeggers to drop off their used equipment at 16 locations throughout the City of Winnipeg.   “Hockey equipment is expensive. Our goal with this equipment drive is to help remove some of the financial barriers to playing recreational hockey,” said Mayor Katz. “I know Winnipeggers are generous. If we can spread the word on this, I am sure Winnipeggers will respond to this city-wide drive.”   Winnipeggers can drop off equipment at any city-owned and operated arena (see list below) and at City Hall until Oct. 28, 2012. Donations will be distributed in Winnipeg by KidSport (a program of Sport Manitoba), Winnipeg Minor Hockey and Hockey Manitoba.   “Sport Manitoba is happy to partner with the City of Winnipeg on this great initiative,” said Jeff Hnatiuk, President and CEO of Sport Manitoba. “There is a shortage of equipment this year and we want all kids to have the opportunity to play and experience the positive benefits of sport any way we can.”   Thomas Steen, a former Winnipeg Jet, and Councillor responsible for Youth and Recreational Opportunities in the City of Winnipeg, says sport equates to opportunity for many young people.   “I know that playing hockey gave me direction as a young person,” said Councillor Steen. “No young person should be denied the opportunity to participate in sport and be engaged in their community because they can’t afford to play,” said Steen.    The City of Winnipeg offers some subsidies for Community Services Department programs and services. Economically disadvantaged individuals can request a subsidy for registered courses, drop-in courses, and admission to City of Winnipeg facilities.   In 2011, the City of Winnipeg, through the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, contributed $179,000 towards subsidization of registration fees, including hockey programs.   -30- Rhea Yates, Press Secretary Mayor’s Office Tel: 204-986-5567 Cell: 204-805-5699  ryates@winnipeg.ca   Equipment drop off locations: ·        City Hall Council Building                   510 Main Street ·        Bertrand Arena                                       294 Bertrand Avenue ·        Billy Mosienko Arena                            709 Keewatin Street ·        Century Arena                                        1377 Clarence Avenue ·        Charles A.
