About John

I grew up in River Heights-Fort Garry and like many in our ward, returned to buy a home here with my wife, Silvia, to raise our two daughters.

With thanks to my father and uncle, I grew up with a lifelong belief in public service. I started as an entrepreneur and small business owner, managing companies in recycling and in conflict resolution.

Prior to being elected in 2009, I was a member of numerous community boards and spent 10 years as a trustee with the Winnipeg School Division.

I am honoured to serve as Deputy Mayor for the City of Winnipeg and represent the City as part of the Million Tree Challenge. I sit on numerous committees and am involved in numerous partnerships with the community that allows me to continually interact with Winnipeggers.

During my time at City Hall as your city councillor, I have had the role of Chair of the Property Development, Heritage and Downtown Development Committee and Chair of the Innovation and Economic Development Committee, and have represented Council on numerous other committees.

With the experience from these roles, and by working with my fellow councillors, I have been successful in advancing projects close to our community’s heart including:
– The Bill and Helen Norrie Library;
– The Waverley Underpass;
– Basement flooding protection provided to thousands of residents with the building of the Cockburn/Calrossie Sewer Separation Project;
– Securing funding to begin $1.5 billion-worth of upgrades to make sure we can continue to grow as a city and protect Lake Winnipeg;
– The launching of the Blue Line BRT and improving transit connectivity;
– Adding unprecedented Active Transportation paths and investments into our tree canopy, to name a few.

There is more work to be done, including addressing climate change and poverty, and together we can keep the positive momentum going.
